Ron and Weifang Charest
Charest Consulting is the semi-retirement project of Ron Charest. Training and consulting is his way of giving back some of what he has learned over a full life.
Ron enlisted in the US Navy in 1974 as an Electronics Technician (ET). Over a 22 year career he served sea tours on the nuclear fast attack submarine USS Scamp (SSN 588), deep-diving research submarine USS Dolphin (AGSS 555), submarine tender USS Dixon (AS 37), and commissioning crew of the Aegis cruiser USS Port Royal (CG 73).
His shore tours included four years as an instructor at Submarine Training Facility San Diego and a three year NATO tour in Naples Italy. He retired in 1996 as a submarine qualified Senior Chief Electronics Technician (ETCS(SS)), with certification as Master Training Specialist. Shortly before retirement he completed his requirements for a B.S. Marketing degree from Excelsior College of Albany, New York.
After his navy retirement Ron settled on the Mississippi Gulf Coast. He spent the next ten years working at a major shipyard designing Microsoft Access database applications for logistics analysis, developing Product Support Analysis (PSA), and performing supportability engineering studies for business development and new ship construction programs.
In September 2006, one year after Hurricane Katrina flooded their home along with most of the Mississippi Gulf Coast, Ron and his wife Weifang relocated to northern Virginia. His first job was with a small firm in Washington, D.C. specializing in foreign military sales to Egypt and Lebanon. In 2008 Ron joined the consulting firm Booz Allen Hamilton. Over the next twelve years Ron worked with two major consulting firms; Booz Allen Hamilton and CACI International.
His consulting assignments covered a variety of acquisition programs for both the U.S. Coast Guard and U.S. Navy in the areas of configuration management and Integrated Logistics Support (ILS). He is now rated a senior logistician holding a broad range of skills and industry-recognized certifications.
In August 2020 Ron joined the US Government Civil Service, working for the US Coast Guard on a major ship acquisition program.
In December 2020 Ron completed a Masters Education degree (MEd) with concentration in Instructional Design and Technology (ID&T) at George Mason University, Fairfax, Virginia. He plans to pursue a third post-retirement career in technical writing, training, and instructional design as part-time work.
