The purpose of this manual is to establish the Expanded Ship Work Breakdown Structure (ESWBS)/System Related Equipment Code (SREC) numbering system, provide guidance for its use and define the application of this system to current and future NAVSEA programs. This manual also promulgates the ESWBS/SREC based Hierarchical Structure Code (HSC) concept, a disciplined configuration baseline integration system for use in new ship designs.
The Ship Work Breakdown Structure (SWBS) was an indenturing language which was to be used throughout the entire ship life cycle, from early design cost studies and weight analyses, through production and logistic support development, to operational phases, including maintenance, alteration and modernization. The Expanded SWBS (ESWBS) is an extension of the three digit SWBS system which satisfies the original intent of the SWBS numbering system by refining the SWBS system descriptions, definitions and boundaries through a structured increase in the levels of indenture. This expansion retains the patterns of the Ship Work Authorization Boundary (SWAB) numbers, while combining the SWBS and SWAB systems into one controlled, consistent language which suits the needs of all users.
